I only teach Intermediate and Advanced students, and my method really depends on the particular student. I don't believe in a single, "core curriculum" for piano-playing. It really depends on the students' goals, strengths/weaknesses, etc. For my beginning intermediate students, I usually give a selection of little pieces to learn by Bach, Schubert, and Schumann to start developing their ear and sense of rhythm/musicality. For my younger students I prefer using the Faber method books as well as "A Dozen A Day" for finger technique and dexterity.  For intermediate and older students I introduce repertoire pieces in addition to leveled method books by Alfred. Not all students are created the same! I do my best to adjust my teaching style and lesson for each student. Especially for novice students, I adjust the pace in order for the student to ease into the instrument. Especially with piano, I advocate warming up and practicing effectively. In my opinion, it is best to work smarter and be efficient with practice time. It is important to me to not only have good technique and a fundamental knowledge of music theory, but to understand the who, what, where, when, how, and why in the music. Read More

My teaching experience dates back all the way to Middle School, when I started teaching my first saxophone student. I continued teaching in High School in the following subject areas: Physics, Geometry, Algebra (all math), and Chemistry. I started teaching swim lessons in early college too.
