Instruments: Piano, Drums, Bass Guitar, Double Bass, Oboe, English Horn, Music

My teaching style is aimed at helping my students express themselves through music, and enjoy playing their instruments. The starting point for this is learning the basics (scales, long tones, arpeggios, etc), but I also encourage my students to improvise and allow themselves to freely play their instrument in a joyful way. I also help them learn pieces and styles that they love. Through working on all of these aspects of being a musician, and encouraging them to take performance opportunities, I help my students to really find their own voice on their instrument. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Double Bass, Keyboard, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar

I have a variety of books I use for beginning students, depending on age and level, including the Alfred guitar book for kids. Regardless of level, I always help students learn some music they are already interested in, as that is a key path to enjoying both the pure joy of music itself and the delight of learning something you didn't know you could do. Another important pathway that I explore with students, earlier or later depending on the student, is to begin to learn to improvise and compose their own music. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Ukulele, Electric Guitar, Classical Guitar, Acoustic Guitar

During your first lesson, we will work on learning chords, and how to read tablature. For younger students, we may start with abbreviated versions of chords in order to start playing popular songs and make the learning process easier. Also, I'll introduce 5-line staff paper sometime during the first few lessons, and we may start work on a simple tune/melody. The goal in the first few lessons is to make progress on a simple song or melody, and especially for adult students, long-term goals should be considered. Read More

Instruments: Guitar, Bass Guitar, Double Bass, Acoustic Guitar

I incorporate different styles of teaching including 'rote learning', which is essentially learning by ear and imitation, as well as uniquely tailored exercises. I incorporate different warm-up etudes that I use with each student to build basic fundamentals of learning the instrument. And I also encourage students to practice scales and drills to develop their muscle memory. I also believe that learning to play an instrument is as much a physical experience as it is a mental one that requires discipline, repetition, hard work, and patience. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Cello, Bass Guitar, Recorder, Double Bass, Keyboard

My primary goal with all of my students is to help them make great music that is true to themselves. I also try to stick with a sound-before-symbol approach to learning music. What this means for my teaching is a focus on training both the ears and technique. I always prefer a more personalized approach to teaching, working with students to find repertoire that speaks to them and improves their musicality and technique. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
