I am a bassist, oboist, English hornist, improviser, and educator based in Boston, Massachusetts. I've been performing professionally for six years throughout the Northeast in a variety of styles and genres. My focus is on improvised music, jazz, and classical music. I perform regularly as a leader and have performed and/or recorded as a sideperson with many artists including Francisco Mela, Tony Malaby and Phil Grenadier. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2022 with Bachelor's Degree in Bass Performance, where I studied with John Lockwood, Bruce Gertz, Bruno Räberg, Linda May Han Oh and many more.
I began teaching private lessons in 2018 for double bass, electric bass, jazz theory, repertoire and improvisation. After graduating from Berklee I began teaching bass for the Hopkinton Music Association, a non-profit supporting music education in Hopkinton Public Schools. In 2023 I was hired as a music teacher for Note-worthy Experiences Music Studio and Karen Amlaw Music, where I teach bass, oboe, and English horn. I love to help students find their artistic voices and discover the joy in music making.
I always create my own custom lesson plans for my students that are tailored to each student's individual development, needs, and musical taste. A really important starting point for all of students is knowing what kind of music they love. I like to help my students develop a list of "goals", pieces, songs, styles, etc that they want to play and work up to, and I use this to create our lesson plans. Another crucial part of my teaching philosophy is to work on basic technique and repertoire. With a strong foundation, musicians have many more possibilities for what they can express through their instruments.
My teaching style is aimed at helping my students express themselves through music, and enjoy playing their instruments. The starting point for this is learning the basics (scales, long tones, arpeggios, etc), but I also encourage my students to improvise and allow themselves to freely play their instrument in a joyful way. I also help them learn pieces and styles that they love. Through working on all of these aspects of being a musician, and encouraging them to take performance opportunities, I help my students to really find their own voice on their instrument. This is what I truly love about teaching: helping students overcome obstacles and be themselves through playing music.
