For beginning students of any age, I focus a lot on technique and building good habits. I will always use Stick Control by G.L. Stone, which has great material for a beginner drummer/percussionist. This is a stage where I will lightly introduce concepts of beat, tempo and rhythm, to help establish a musical vocabulary. Once I've determined that they have a good grasp of time and rhythm, I slowly begin to introduce rudiments and reinforce them lesson by lesson. Read More

My instruction method is to assess each student's experience, ability, and goals on guitar, bass, or songwriting/composition, and tailor my instruction to the individual skill level and needs. I take a song-centric approach, and introduce or reinforce techniques using songs that feature that technique or musical concept as a way to keep students engaged beyond rote memorization of scales, patterns, techniques, etc. I also use a song-based approach as a way to bring in theory and a deeper understanding of the whats and whys of music, while still focusing on the fun of playing using songs that the student wants to learn. I base my students' curriculum on their individual needs and interests. I strongly believe in learning fundamentals and the principals of music through scales, music theory, ear training, and reading music notation. I believe it is equally important for students to develop their own musical interests and goals so that we can apply all of the practiced skills in a fun and meaningful way. An example of this would is if a student wanted to learn a Beatles song I would have the student learn the chords and melody, but also the associated major/minor scale that song uses and develop an exercise that would be helpful towards learning the song. I like to lay a foundation for what musical notes are and how they relate to the instrument. If we're on guitar I will draw a piano keyboard and give the student the guitar string names and make them figure out the rest of the notes. Then I teach them what chords are and, now that they know their way around a fretboard, they can build the chords themselves. While most students aren't total beginners and won't need all of this groundwork to be laid by me, I've found that almost everyone has gaps in knowledge, more often than not when it comes to actual note names and the music theory behind the instrument. The most important people in my life have always been my teachers. Teachers in my life have been to thank for my greatest triumphs and to no one else do I owe such a great debt. However, careless teachers have driven many students away from a musical life, and left indelible scars on others. Thus, it is with the greatest respect and acknowledgment of responsibility that I approach my teaching style. Read More

I like to divide my lessons in two parts: first we address the most formal aspects of the lesson, most of the times using a method book or given hand-outs or whatever relevant material was suggested to the student; the remainder of the lesson is dedicated to work on the students choice of a song or anything less formal suggested by myself. This scheme for lessons might be different regarding the level and commitment of the student, but it is in general the outline I use. Read More
