With my educational background and passion for music it would be difficult to find another instructor with more depth.I have taught guitar for over 20 years to students ranging in ages from 6-60. I have performed with and coached multiple bands, ensembles, soloists, and private students and I have loved every minute of it. In my experience I have found that, with the right instructor, exploring a wonderfully dense topic such as music heightens discipline, motivation, focus, confidence, and sensitivity. Read More

I like to work with students individually for their own goals and skill level. For younger students, we work on msuciality and basics of singing through devleopmentally appropriate (and fun!) songs. Regardless of the student's level, each lesson contains singing repertoire, vocal exercises to work on technique, and musicianship skills. The combination of these elements will depend entirely on the student's needs and desires! At the consultation lesson, I will provide a written assessment of where I see the student progressing and propose a plan to reach the students stated goals, focusing always on the process of individual development. In class I work on the development of the singing voice through body awarenessapplying the Feldenkrais Methodand voice techniques from the worlds of classical, jazz and contemporary music. Aural awareness is improved through ear exercises singing. Techniques for performance practice and dealing with performance anxiety are addressed. During the work process students work on individual song interpretation/presentation and on individual improvisation (if the student is interested). Read More

I have been teaching on and off for 30 years but especially the past 15. I was Head of Vocal Studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 2004-2009 and then at the Macau Polytechnic Institute. I also presented Masterclasses in China and around Asia. I have been teaching since returning to New York City and several of my students now have professional management to help them in their careers. Read More

I believe in acquiring a global understanding through a multiplicity of styles. Jazz and classical are my points of departure and then I incorporate different material as you develop your skills. I have several method books that I use including "Mastering Piano Technique", "Manual of Scales and Arpeggios", "The Jazz Theory Book" and "Harmony and Theory" by Keith Wyatt to name a few. For vocalists, I develop your sound to a point where we can do a full basic assessment of skills that we can build off of so we have a clear direction of where we are going. Read More

For adolescent beginner piano students I recommend 'John Thompson's Earliest Piano Course'. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with. For beginning students, I always start by learning the notes on the staff that corresponds with their specific instrument. Knowledge and confidence of this is crucial to the learning process. Next, I pick a method book to work through to learn the fundamentals. For trombone, I use Rubank's "Elementary Method." It is a great progressive studies that has great explanations, exercises, etudes, duets, mini-solos, scales studies, and more for young students. Read More
