In my teaching I aim to first assess where the student's skill level currently stands. I focus on being able to continuously develop a student's ear, theory knowledge, techique, and sight-reading. While working in these areas, I like to connect with the student on their individual goals and what they want to work on in their lessons. I like to take each of my students on a case-by-case basis. I learn a little about them, what their goals in taking lessons are, and what kinds of music the like to play. When I reach for a method book, it is usually Mel Bay or Berklee Music Press for electric bass and guitar, or The Simandl Method for upright bass. I like to gauge what level the student is at and go from there, making sure that they have a strong foundation of fundamentals regardless of what the student's ultimate goal is. Read More

Every student progresses at their own pace. I write out the homework for the week on a piece of paper for both them and the parent to see. When their expectations are written out, it's easier to see how far they've progressed. Most of my lessons start out with asking how their week went and how much practice they were able to get in. We then review the material from the week before and talk about the progress or any difficulties they may have come across during the week. Read More

Each lesson is personalized to the students needs. Their level,age and abilities, type of style that they are interested in learning, as well as how much practicing that they can commit to a week. I also like to incorporate music technology into teaching guitar. By using drum loops for instance and getting students to play chords and rhythm patterns along with loops, makes things more fun and dynamic! If a student wants to learn how to read, we will usually start with a simple method book as well as incorporating TAB into the lesson. Read More
