I like to meet with my students and get an idea of the pace in which the learn and how much effort they want to put in. I do encourage the importance of learning standard music notation because I believe that it helps understand the big picture of music. I believe that not knowing how to read standard music notation is akin to speaking a language but not being able to read or write it.
