I feel that this cookie cutter approach doesnt successfully work for everybody as it assumes everyone is the same. I have taught thousands of students over the decades and can say that I havent seen two students exactly alike the entire time. Every student is different. I understand this and use it to my advantage. Early on I will use my own methods of building coordination between the fingers and the instrument. We will quickly learn simple chords and will be able to start playing along with songs in the first few lessons! I will even find ways to get students to play along with songs of their choosing! The benefits of reading and understanding sheet music as it relates to your instrument far outweigh those of simple tablature used for guitar and banjo etc. However, in some cases it is practical to use non-traditional forms of instruction.
