For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I began teaching for Pendragon's Music in 1990, and since had taught for 22 years at a couple of the local music stores. My teaching experience began in 2011. A friend of mine had bought a guitar and did not know a single thing about the instrument. he asked me if I could teach him how to play. After a few weeks of methods that I taught him and, exercises he was able to play the guitar without frustration. I always tell my students when they are starting out to give themselves at least 15 minutes a day to keep up on exercises to build up muscle memory. Read More

I’m a great listener as I pointed out earlier. My musical strength has always been my ear. I’ve learned all major and minor scales with arpeggios through schooling and that’s great knowledge to have. I focus my teaching technique on scales and arpeggios to show that music heavily comprises of these fundamental elements. But I also teach students who want to learn by ear training and I teach students how to tune the instruments which is a major skill to have. Read More

My program is one that I have developed over the last 18 years. I use no method books. I ask my students to bring a blank manuscript book that I will fill up as we go forward. I also highly encourage all of my students to have a keyboard of some kind available to them, IE: a piano, organ, or even one of those battery-powered little CASIO keyboards that one can buy for $15-25 at a Salvation Army or Goodwill store.
