ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, Portland State University

Overview:
I am a professional working jazz musician who has been performing for over 25 years In a variety of settings and in many different genres of music. I have had many great experiences in my performances throughout the country including many working sessions with jazz greats in the legendary Portland jazz music scene. I am a very passionate musician who is dedicated to sharing my musical knowledge and experience with my students since I began teaching 20 years ago. I love to help each of my students accomplish and succeed in whatever area of music that they choose.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching as part of my college degree curriculum as a student and my love for teaching expanded into private lessons which continue into the present day. I really enjoy helping my students find and cultivate a real love for music. I encourage regular and devoted practice time in order for my students to enjoy the rewarding experience that music will bring their lives. I look for the individual goals that my students would like to accomplish and provide a path for them to be able to achieve those goals.
METHODS USED
My methods of instruction are taylor made for each individual student. For example I will teach a beginner student that wants to learn the guitar as an instrument and music theory basic technique, chords, scales, and how to read music, as well as enjoyable songs that capture their personal interests. I prefer Mel Bay instruction books and encourage playing by ear that is appropriate to the level of the student. Most importantly I teach in all circumstances that music will always give back what students put into it. It will never short change you!
LESSON STYLE
My approach to teaching kids has always emphasized finding joy in the instrument. I will always start with the a good foundation of a solid understanding of music fundamentals and work with the kids at a pace that allows them to grow yet really enjoy what they are doing. For older kids and adults I make sure that I have a good understanding of what they are trying to achieve and provide the tools to allow them to get accomplish their goals. All ages are encouraged to enjoy and recognize the benefits that music has brought to their lives.

Brian has made my love of the sax grow to an even higher level. He has helped me improve technically through better fingerings and tone. I enjoy the music so much more now. Thank you Brian!

Brian is both talented as a musician and adaptable as a teacher. He has been giving lessons to both of my middle-school aged brothers in back-to-back sessions--and teaching them two separate instruments at that! He is encouraging and patient and has even been kind enough to be flexible with the timing of our sessions. And most of all, he really knows what he's doing with this virtual learning. Would recommend if you need lessons for more than one young musician in your family.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
