As far as my teaching methods go, I do not use any of the course books commonly used by many teachers and studios. I feel that this cookie cutter approach doesnt successfully work for everybody as it assumes everyone is the same. I have taught thousands of students over the decades and can say that I havent seen two students exactly alike the entire time. For example I will teach a beginner student that wants to learn the guitar as an instrument and music theory basic technique, chords, scales, and how to read music, as well as enjoyable songs that capture their personal interests. In college my skill increased tremendously and at the same time I was constantly being recommended for teaching positions of other undergraduate students by the music professors. During this entire time, and since I have continued teaching private lessons either on my own, or through schools such as Stone Grove Guitars or American Music Institute in the chicagoland. I also spent years teaching large ensembles so I understand how much a student can improve when they are performing, which is why I always encourage students to join bands, talent shows or recitals. For beginning students that are children, I like to start with Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements or any other book that has the basic principles of music in them. Once the student has progressed and has a good grasp of the fundamentals, I will bring in other repertoire appropriate to their level. For adults, I like to find out what the student is interested in and then tailor the lesson toward that to keep lessons engaging and fun no matter what their abilities are. I always try to keep the lessons fun and entertaining.
