For young children, the main idea is to have music and its elements be a fundamental part of their mental development. It is important for them to want to pursue and unlock it themselves. Making it fun and rewarding can help greatly. For older children, I like to try and instill a sense of identity with the music that they may like and blend the technical knowledge with gearing towards the work of artists, musicians, or composers that they enjoy. Learn the fundamentals and then move towards applying it quickly to keep eagerness high. With adults of any ability level, it is important that all the gaps in the fundamentals are filled in so as to be fully equipped to move into any goals that the student has and then move towards those goals together in a fun and stress-free way.
When meeting a student, I want to find their "currency". Meaning, I want to find what makes them want to work and practice. There is nothing more rewarding than working for a goal and accomplishing it. I like finding music that my student wants to learn and making a music theory lesson that compliments the instrument lesson.
I was born in Marshall, Texas. I received my Bachelor of Music and my Master of Fine Arts in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. I've spent seven years in public schools in the surrounding Houston area before coming on to teach with KIPP Houston Public Schools in 2012. My primary instrument is violin/viola under the training of Dr. Isidor Saslav, but spend my weekends on bass for community events and local performances. As a young musician, I received an opportunity to perform with my former orchestra teacher Ken Lattimore, who is now a member of country and western group Sons of the Pioneers. In my musical career, Mr. Jackson has performed with the Marshall Symphony, Orchestra of the Pines, the SFA Chamber Orchestra and the Mu Xi Chapter Men’s Chorus of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. At KIPP Houston Public Schools, my students have been featured performers at the Muscular Dystrophy Association Annual Muscle Walk, Downtown Houston’s House of Blues, the 2014 KIPP Gala, and with Mark Wood (co-founder of world famous Trans-Siberian Orchestra) in a combined Electrify Your Strings concert including KIPP Sharp Orchestra, KIPP Sharpstown Orchestra and Choir, and YES Prep Orchestra.

For students interested in bass we recommend being at least 10 years old. The bass is a large instrument that has thick, heavy strings. Younger students may lack the hand strength required to be able to play the instrument successfully. By playing bass, students have the opportunity to participate in contemporary playing ensembles such as school jazz bands, and more rock styled groups.
There are many popular brands of bass guitars, including Fender, Gibson, and Ibanez. All will offer a you quality instrument. 4-string basses are standard, and are what most beginners will choose. If you are more advanced, or interested in heavier rock music, a 5 string bass may also be a good option.
Any adult can start bass lessons with Musika. Even with no prior experience, bass can be a great instrument to start learning music. Bass is utilized in many popular genres and adults can learn to play along with their favorite songs.

Laura is the kind of teacher you wish you had in all your studies: gracious, easy-going, light-hearted, yet behind the easy going exterior is an excellent musical mind with everything at her fingertips. I've had about 5 teachers in my life who count as really influential people, and Laura easily fits that category. She lets you be yourself so that you are fully present rather than old-school doctrinaire style, what I call "stiff as a German, sig-heil" teachers. She's the polar opposite. Brava, Laura! Thank you so much!

Bill has been great with my 2 young children (age 3 & 6). He has integrated games into the lessons - they have enjoyed showing us how to play the games when it is time to practice piano. Bill has been easy to contact and rescheduling has not been a problem if we have a conflict at our regular lesson time.

Angela has been a perfect match-up for me. She is warm and welcoming, and also serious about teaching - she keeps our time focused and on track. What I truly appreciate, as a new singer anxiously preparing for an event, is the confidence she gives me. Angela is very encouraging. I enjoy coming to class.

I am in my 60s and decided to get back into playing my guitar. I thought taking lessons would be a good way to formalize the endeavor. I did have some concern about whether working with a teacher would work out as I've behave only played for my own enjoyment for a long time. Peter and I have had a few lessons together and I am truly enjoying the experience. He is very supportive and flexible. We arrived at a three gold approach that is really working for me. We focus on developing a playlist, learning some of the more iconic tunes from leading artist that I would have a hard time learning on my own and developing some technical skills related to style and music theory. Now I look forward to my next lesson and am already playing better and enjoying the journey. Peter is a great teacher I'm lucky to have the opportunity to work with him.

Ted S. is teaching clarinet to one of my children, and piano to two others. He is extremely knowledgeable, and very encouraging. His teaching methods are keeping my children enthused about their lessons, and without that, you have nothing. Two of my children were taking piano lesson from another teacher for the past year, and not progressing. Ted has been able to evaluate their skills individually, determine what was missing in their music education, and begin again with some early basics they seem to have missed. I am convinced we are finally moving forward, and am very happy about that. I wish I would have made this change much earlier.

I've been taking lessons from Michael once a week for eight weeks now, and with his help I have made dramatic improvements with my sax. Michael is a funny, nice, patient and all around great instructor. I'd recommend Michael, as an instructor, to anyone who wants to improve their skills and have fun while doing it.

I have known Erin since I attended graduate school at the Hartt School in Connecticut. Last year she came to the college I teach at to give a master class and talk about her experiences as a musician abroad. She has proven that she is a capable and wonderful musician and educator. I highly recommend studying with her if you're lucky enough to have the opportunity!

She is amazing! My daughter, Isabella (7 yrs) is totally engaged in the lesson. Lilly's definitely has a gift with teaching young children!!! A great talent of hers is making the content interesting, current to today's music and most of all fun! She has a knack for taking the material and translating it in a way that is relatable to Isabella. My daughter really enjoys her lesson's and has moved along rather quickly with the material. Thanks Lilly!

Ali was an amazing voice coach! She taught in a way that made sense to me, and helped me find the voice placements I needed. I didn't know I could sound like that! My development with her was leaps and bounds rather than tiny dreadful steps that happen when you don't know what's going on! Ali was dedicated to helping me work on an audition for a music scholarship and I nailed it all thanks to her, seriously. I can't thank her enough! She helped me with the tools and confidence I needed to sing in the real world alone rather than just back row in a large choir.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
