In addition to the Danish pedagogical methods and the training I received from my own teachers, I base my methods on what I learned from the renowned and innovative educator, Jeffrey Chappell (see http://musiceverybody.com/). I also hold to the philosophy that music is, in itself, another language. Because of that, no matter what the students age or skill level might be, I always combine the technical and theoretical elements of music with the expressive and creative elements. Read More

I have found that for musicians at all levels, especially beginners, exploration is key. Learning an instrument is like building a relationship with that instrument and discovering what sounds you can create together. I use this guided discovery as a tool for discussing technique and musical ideas. Once enough fundamentals are grasped, I introduce repertoire which will lead to a recital performance. I always keep in mind the specific interests of the student and work towards meeting their individual goals. Read More

I thoroughly enjoy seeing students progress, and the main ingredient in progression is practice! I try to make sessions memorable and keep the content engaging so that students can carry that with them throughout the week. I find if students aren't engaged in what the current task is, they will find it difficult to move forward and progress through their learning process. The main way I do this is by finding a tangible goal that a student can achieve week by week or month by month and having that be their motivation. Read More

My approach seeks to breathe air under the wings of the students' interest and attention by making them a constant starting point, while also laying the groundwork of introspection for students to develop and apply their own practices of learning, exploration, and innovation going forward. My teaching methods focus on considering embodied experiences of music, as well as a range of philosophical considerations. Students will be encouraged to think about how feelings, subjectivities, sounds, and spaces interact in complex ways, along with a series of other metaphysical questions that I believe are essential to a holistic praxis of understanding and learning music. Modern life is very busy and full of distraction. For many of us, daily life in particular is also filled with lots of obligations, which can drain us of our creative energy. Experience with hundreds of students over decades has shown me that when the music lesson becomes just another part of that sense of obligation, it produces negative outcomes. I've always felt that the music lesson should provide a respite from this, while still helping students to pursue their musical interests and develop their abilities to the fullest of their potential. It takes discipline to learn to play an instrument but the journey to consistent improvement should be enjoyable. I am experienced in a wide range of musical styles and I try to help students pursue their individual musical interests. Lessons in music theory, technique, sight reading and musical performance are taught to each student. Read More
