I have several tools that I use to get students playing music.  One of my favorite tools is the Music Flashcards made by Bastien.  Rather than teaching notes using an acronym like "every good boy deserves fudge" to teach notes, I use landmarks which get students to see the relationship between notes and allow them to read music with fluidity and ease.  I pair these flashcards with Music Tree book 1 and feel that they compliment each other very well. Upon graduating from high school, I started teaching bass lessons when possible and quickly fell in love with teaching. I specialize in taking a practical approach to teaching, where there is more emphasis on the instrument as it tends to keep students interested and motivated through the difficult early stages. I will often start beginning students with George Vance method books, emphasizing sound setup, facility, notation reading and musicality. With more advanced students, we will evaluate their tastes and experience to determine the best music for study. The Bach Cello suites are a life long endeavor for many bassists, and the major concertos and sonatas are a way for the motivated bassist to attain performance opportunities. I don't rely on lesson plans, I observe the student as they run through exercises, and I develop each lesson based on areas that they need improvement in.
