I started first by teaching kindermusik for babies and toddlers in a neighborhood church location and a music studio in the Copperfield area, then I opened my home studio in 2004 by offering group keyboarding lessons for many young beginners. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. I have my students start with sufficient stretching to get the body ready for singing. Following that, I warm up their voices with different scales and specific singing exercises, which I will use independently with students in different levels. Afterwards, we work on the music. I usually pick the music for my students. However, if there is a piece of music that my student particularly wants to learn, I am willing to compromise as long as it is suitable for his/her voice. Different students have different levels of perception or assimilation. This i establish before i even start the introductory class proper. Then i go through the fundamentals with the student, and observe their progress along the way.
