Overview:
I love sharing my love of music with my students. I have been playing the piano since I was five years old, and I have participated in many recitals and church music programs. In 2004, I opened my home studio to offer group keyboarding lessons to my first groups of students in Houston and ever since then I have worked with both young children, school age kids, teens, and adults to introduce them to the wonderful world of music over the past 10+ years. I have given vocal/piano/keyboard workshops to train current/potential worship team members at my home church, I also enjoy volunteering to coach youths to play praise songs by piano/keyboard in a team/band setting on weekly basis. I have more than 20+ years of experience serving as a vocalist and pianist at my home church worship team(s) in the West Houston Area. My gift and passion to teach enables me to set example for lifelong learning.
EXPERIENCE
I have been offering group and private piano classes specialized in teaching beginners(both children and adults) using Mayron Cole's Piano Method for 10+ years in my home studio. I started first by teaching kindermusik for babies and toddlers in a neighborhood church location and a music studio in the Copperfield area, then I opened my home studio in 2004 by offering group keyboarding lessons for many young beginners. Motivating students to progress and gain a passion for using their voice and learning the instrument as music lovers is my life long passion. I believe in and encourage consistency in practices as essential for all learning.
METHODS USED
For beginners, I typically start with Mayon Cole's EZ Keys for younger children (age 4.5 to 5), and I use manehune (age 6) or level one (age 7-10) or above for elementary school age children. Once the student has progressed and gain confidence in sight reading and rhythm/counting, I will then supplement the curriculum with solo repertoires from other piano curriculum such as Fabor/Fabor or Alfred series (Little Mozart). I also introduce chords playing for contemporary/praise music when the student is ready. For teens and adult beginners (age 11 and up), I use the books specially complied for older beginners then progress to level three or above. I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun for the appropriate level(s). I like Mayron Cole piano method because it provide solid progression for rhythm counting, systematic build up for sight reading as well as introducing key concepts in music theory/history/genre. The staff notes are bigger and easier to read, it is a well written all in one curriculum which I've used over 10+ years with proven success. Audition is required for young beginners and for transferred students using other piano methods.
LESSON STYLE
It is rewarding for me to see my students developing passion for music! Therefore, I believe it is important for students to progress at their own pace by setting realistic and proper goals/objectives. Believing that each student is unique, I enjoy getting to know my students in order to assess their strengths as well as areas for improvement. My school/group/private teaching experiences combined enhances me to relate and encourage students to adjust and set appropriate steps and goals to reach their full potentials. My philosophy and approach in teaching is to help students to establish a solid foundation first, which are rhythm/sight reading for piano, and breathing/blending/connecting vowels for vocal training, then based on students' abilities and interests to apply and work toward mastery of knowledge, understanding and application toward their learning goals and objectives. I value feedback from both students and parents to ensure a good relational dynamic to promote an active learning process for inquiry and success. I do not pressure students to enter competitions and recitals are optional unless 10 or more students are willing to participate. I do encourage students to look for opportunity to play/sing in their school/church or in front of their friends/family for special occasions. Game playing is incorporated within the lesson time to reinforce/review key concepts/skills or knowledge for group lesson setting of 2-3 students as an additional feature. Rewards/Certificates are given upon the completion of each level with weekly progress tracking. I am flexible to work with students' schedule. Though I have a 24 hours cancellation policy, make up lesson usually can be arranged when notice is given in advance. To ensure the best environment and utilize the resources I have available, I do prefer students to come to my neighborhood locations (77077 or 77043) for private lessons or group classes. However, I am willing to travel to another location if the distance is reasonable and not too far (within 10 miles). I look forward hearing from you and helping you to achieve success in your musical adventure.

Ms. Cheryl is an excellent teacher in my opinion. She teaches my two grand kids (age 7 and ) piano every week for about half a year so far. She loves them, show the enthusiastic and patience to guide the kids to appreciate music, even motivate them to practice on their own! I am amazed in what the influences the teacher can make! She writes down all the songs need to be practiced, the optional and sometimes the reviews! I really appreciate her!

I attended Cheryl's keyboard and piano training and she is very patient to a beginner like me! I have not played piano for years and with her encouragements and demonstrations on simple techniques, she brought back my passion on playing piano again. Very inspiring lesson!
