I will start new students, especially young students, with folk songs, games and exercises to train the ear, sense of rhythm, and acting muscles, prepare them to be able to read and understand musical notation, and encouragement to perform in a solo capacity when possible. As students progress in skill and expertise, we will begin learning songs with notation, continue developing sight reading and aural skills, introduce more challenging repertoire and foreign languages, deepen technical vocabulary and understanding, and prepare for audition opportunities. I typically do a quick first lesson assessment to determine how advanced the student is and go from there. For beginning students, I usually start with recognizing note patterns. I have them listen to their favorite songs and mimic the melody back to me. This is the beginning of their basic ear training. Nothing is more important to me than my students' personal goals and having a discussion on how we can achieve those goals. I always want to make sure my students are moving forward in their creative process, so I like to check in with them at each lesson to discuss their progress. It's definitely important to me that my students practice on their own (especially if we're having lessons once/week.) I like to have my students record themselves (using the voice memo feature on their phone or, if possible, another recording device) so they can listen back to their lessons and practice between lessons. Knowing the music theory behind what you're playing is so important and helps the music make much more sense.
