I've been teaching private lessons for approximately 15 years. I've worked with all ages and skill levels across many genres. I would say my speciality is working with teenagers and adults who are just starting to figure out more specific directions they want to move in, and helping them dial in their goals and musical vocabulary. For beginner students of instruments I focus first on fundamentals, such as finger placement, note names, what makes up chords so forth (again with a high emphasis on practice). For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between keeping the student working on music that challenges them,and advances their technique, with the need to have fun and enjoy the playing of a musical instrument as a means of entertainment and relaxation. For younger students I try to find out where they are in their music classes at school and incorporate as much of that curriculum into my instruction as possible. For older or more advanced students I find out what type of music they are interested in learning and gear my instruction towards their interests.
