Once the students have learned the basics, I play for them several pieces they would want to play for the next recital coming up so they can have an idea of what they like. For Intermediate players, I love the Dozen a Day collection, Hanon, and Alfred books. While there is no "One-size-fits-all" for all students, I start most students off with Essential Elements or Suzuki. As they progress I try to include pieces they like, pop songs, and different genres. The variety helps them stay engaged, learn a bit about different styles to broaden their knowledge, but also, have fun. As they get intermediate levels the paths diverge. It makes playing the piano even more rewarding. MANY MUSICIANS CAN'T SIGHT READ MUSIC like a trained pianist. Many musicians just use chords and a melody. So its important for a student to also learn chords and melody of songs that the students really like.This helps them to be more flexible in being to work on a solo piece of music or with a group of musician friends.Besides method piano books, I try to find music that the student really likes, that way they feel excited about playing a song that's cool and recognizable. I start with students by asking them what they want to accomplish on whatever instrument we're working on, and that will change the way the lessons progress. After the basics, if they want to study classical music, contemporary, or just strengthen the basic skills they have, then we progress from there.
