Instruments: Drums
My teaching style is fairly relaxed. The pace depends on the students' goals and skill level. Most importantly, I want the student to have fun! I like to encourage students to become proficient in reading, but I only will use books that suit the students needs and desires. As such, there is no one book or program that I depend on. However, I do insist that students practice and come prepared to each lesson. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Drums
The most important aspect of pedagogy which, I have learned from my own experience, is that music is best learned through MUSIC! I will always work with the student to find out what they want to play and teach through that style and those pieces; theory and technique are inherent to music from pop to classical and everything in between! I will also work with the student on expanding their own musical horizons and hopefully discover new music together with them Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice Bass Guitar Double Bass
I began teaching voice 6 years ago, while still in my own undergraduate studies. Teaching bass and piano quickly followed once I realized how much I enjoyed the teaching side of music. I learned to love music at an early age, which got me into taking lessons, and eventually learning the process that is required to move a student forward. Slow and steady progress in all areas of music is the way I have learned, and is the way that I teach. Read More
Instruments: Trombone Euphonium
For beginners I focus mostly on creating a solid tone, building the muscles around their embouchure for endurance, flexibility, and ear training. I typically will start working with students out of Book 2 of John Kinyon's Basic Training Course for Trombone. Eventually, I will introduce the student to more of the typical etude books like Voxman's Selected Studies, Arban's Famous Method for Trombone, and Joannes Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. Once I feel a student is ready I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for the student's skill level and as my studio grows I hope to have students working together in small ensembles and perform in a recital. I started teaching music about 10 years ago, and Ive always enjoyed working with students. Ive performed professionally in several bands on multiple instruments in the past 10 years, and Ive also done a good bit of studio work from composition and recording, to producing, to mastering. I emphasize practice, having fun, and learning useful skills as the keys to success in music lessons. I do believe a good combination of modern music, classical music, and music theory is the best way to become a well-rounded musician and maximize enjoyment! Read More
Instruments: Piano Synthesizer Mallet Percussion
Music inspires every human being in some capacity. Not everybody can appreciate all genres of music. While there are melodies and harmonies that are pivitol for creating a strong foundation as a musician, I prefer to work with the student in a genre that will inspire the student to want to practice. If there is desire to practice, the student will continue to grow musically. Therefore, I don't want to force a student to play Mozart when it might be the music of Bruce Hornsby that inspires the student to live another day and vice versa. Read More
