For example, some students may want to be better for school band, and some students may just want to be able to pay with their favorite songs. It is important that every student learns and improves at their own pace because everyone learns differently. So I break down songs and theory in to increments so that they can be more easily digested over time. I find that this method of learning is extremely helpful in the retention of the knowledge the student learns. Also not all students are interested in learning the same things so I think it is very important to find out what the student wants to learn and gain from playing music and what their expectations for themselves are. This tends to be a combination of songs they know and love, and songs that I introduce them to. I introduce the elements of music theory in relation to songs. Scales, harmony, and ear training are grasped better, and enjoyed more, once a student has context.
