It is hard for me to write out one method because I try to cater my lesson plan to the student. Generally speaking, however, for younger children, I really try to nail down the fundamentals of music. Good technique, reading music and basic music theory are skills that need to be developed at a young age in order to make things easier later on. It's important to create good habits early so that they stick. Read More

I began teaching guitar while in high school, and have had students consistently since 2002. During college I taught private guitar lessons both in Grand Rapids and Ypsilanti Michigan. After graduating I begam teaching guitar, audio engineering, and music business at Grand Rapids Community College. From 2009-2016 I was an instructor for a teen music program myself and other members of The Outer Vibe started called "Rock Camp." This was a week long summer camp which the students formed bands and practiced songs to play a concert at the end of the week. Read More

No matter the age of the student, I believe in project-based learning: I help my them write songs, make arrangements, record albums, and prepare for recitals. They will develop a respect for the craft of making music, the more creatively involved they are. A list of a couple highly recommended instruction books is given to each student on their first day. This is to help them grasp the basic language of their instrument. Read More

My career as a teacher began 14 years ago, at the age of 14, giving guitar lessons to my friends and classmates around town. Since then I have continued to teach guitar, music theory, and ear-training to beginning and intermediate musicians of all ages and backgrounds. Emphasizing the direct correlation between consistent practice and gradual, sustained improvement is an integral part of my personal teaching method; one of the most rewarding moments of teaching and learning music, for both student and teacher, is when a student sees and internalizes the progress they've made as a result of the work they've put in. I am very passionate and dedicated about my playing. It is not easy but the end result is well worth the effort. I graduated from Free Will Baptist Bible Collage in 2008 with my Bachelor of Art in flute performance I also took my flute lessons at Belmont University. Since then I've played in various mediums, and really got a greater appreciation in slowly frogressing in my sucsess as a flute player. whilebi never thought I'd be a teacher, it's always a wonderful feeling to pass down the tradition of good flute playing. Instruments: Clarinet
For beginners, I like to establish a steady embrochure and hold on the clarinet. It is important to establish these crucial elements. I also strongly believe in scales right off the bat and try to integrate these in an interesting way, along with some beginning solo repertoire. Past that, I love getting my intermediate students started on weekly or bi-weekly etudes. For the more serious student, I base it off of what they are currently trying to achieve, such as upcoming auditions, orchestral repertoire, competitions, summer festival prep, etc. Read More

For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between keeping the student working on music that challenges them, and advances their technique, with the need to have fun and enjoy the playing of a musical instrument as a means of entertainment and relaxation.
