I am a working private brass instructor in the middle Tennessee area. I am currently studying Music Education at Lipscomb University and previously taught lessons at Middle Tennessee Christian School. I am currently the intern of the Nashville Trombone Academy where my responsibilities include rehearsal coordination, demonstration, content creation, and management of our online presence. As far as performance experience, I have done a little bit of everything. I have performed in music videos, recording sessions, classical concerts, chamber ensembles, marching band, and even in the horn section of a rock band. Read More

I want nothing but success for my students. Because of this, I make sure he or she is given goals that are going to be realistic for them to hit. It is important that each student moves at their own pace. I want each student to truly desire to learn more. Fun is key in learning a topic such as music. I try to have an open line of communication for what my students want to learn and what their specific and personal goals are. Read More

I teach students of a variety of ages and skill levels and I enjoy developing unique curriculum to fit each students needs and stylistic interests while incorporating elements of theory, ear training, singing and general music fundamentals into the lessons. I feel that teaching using real songs is the best and most engaging way to learn. I generally try to avoid teaching from a method book and instead work with a student to find what music excites them and use that as a way to introduce fundamentals. Read More

My main focus is on reaching the student, and fostering their love of music. I am adamant about instilling in students the genuine excitement and desire to pick up their instrument and practice. This is the most important lesson and will never leave a student. I do this largely by integrating what a student needs to learn in order to excel into what they want to learn, and I have had great success with this method. Read More

For my beginning students, I typically start with either Essential Elements 2000 for strings or Sound Innovations. Both books give younger students a grasp on the fundamentals of technique. As they grow I then introduce solo repertoire by using the Suzuki Books but also like to add a fiddle book. Sometimes students gradually go either to fiddle or to classical. I try and encourage what they are more comfortable with. For adults, I try to find out what genre of music they enjoy and try to gauge their ability level with a couple playing evaluations. Above all else, music is supposed to be fun. I want my students to be excited about learning new things each week. Music is also a collaborative practice, so I think it is important for the student and the teacher to play together in a supportive environment to help reaffirm the week's lesson. I understand that each student is different, and weekly assignments will be given accordingly. This will require a reasonable weekly goal so that students can see their progress and feel good about their accomplishments, inspiring them to continue playing and learning. Often times when it comes to music instruction some misleading statements come up. A popular misconception is that playing a instrument is all muscle memory. This is not a complete or true statement. Muscle memory is only a part, it is the recall mechanism of what we have practiced. If you learn something wrong you will recall it wrong. Having a fundamental understanding of how drumming works can make the experience of learning to play great for the student. Read More
