For all students I start with the basic fundamentals. For younger students I try to find out where they are in their music classes at school and incorporate as much of that curriculum into my instruction as possible. For older or more advanced students I find out what type of music they are interested in learning and gear my instruction towards their interests. I am a positive and dedicated musician and music teacher who has a unique background of formal classical training and experience in various other genres. I have 12 years of classical training on the violin, have taught private violin and viola lessons to more than 300 students over the course of 6 summers through the Hempfield School District, participated in the NAfME All-Eastern Orchestra, performed for a year as the bluegrass and old-time fiddler in the Joe Hillman Band (Philadelphia, PA), performed as the celtic fiddler in The Ogham Stones (Lancaster, PA) for one year, and have led my own band for 2 years as a singer, songwriter and guitar player. For all students (beginners and students with prior experience) I begin with teaching scales and arpeggios. Scales and arpeggios are the foundation of keyboard technique, and are found in all piano repertoire the student will encounter. I generally use the Macfarren Scale and Arpeggio Manual for older children/adults (those who read music) or the Scales, Chords, Arpeggios, and Cadences: First Book (Alfred) for children. If my student cannot read music I teach them scales and arpeggios without music, while teaching them how to read music from a method book. Read More

Though I adapt my approach and conversation techniques for all of my students, my underlying philosophy is the same for every student Ive ever taught. The philosophy is that progress is what were striving for, not perfection. I assess the skill and technical abilities and grow from that point. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! I find it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.
