I have over 12 years teaching experience both piano and voice to students of all levels and ages. When I work with a student, my first goal is to establish a positive, open dialogue where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new techniques or styles, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. From there, I prioritize developing a healthy technique in both singing and playing piano, emphasize musical literacy where we regularly work on reading notes on a modern staff notation (with all the accompanying vocabulary), and explore a wide range of repertoire that speaks to the student. To begin with, I teach my students how to develop their own warm up method which includes breathing and stretching, vocalizations and good old fashioned solfege. You will learn to understand your own vocal mechanism and how it resonates, as well as how breath support works, and their effects on the singing voice. I try to incorporate different exercises for each piece of music to keep things interesting for my students. I believe active physical engagement of the body is important to achieve freedom for the voice. This is particularly helpful for younger children to keep their minds from wandering during the lesson. I often ask for feedback from the students, to check in on how they are feeling physically and vocally. During our lessons, I hope to train up students to be creative thinkers and discerning individuals so that they can find their own authentic interpretation of the song. Read More
