Generally, I sit down with the student and we set a goal. From there I can break down this goal into little Milestones and from there, the material for each lesson springs forth. Some of it may be from books, some may be a customized adaptation of a song they want to learn made for their specific level. At the start of the first lesson, I give each new student a questionniare to fill out that tells me their musical background, influences, goals for the instrument and what music they are interested in learning. If the new student is a younger child, I begin them with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book One. Once they have grasped the simple chords and melodies of the book, I begin to introduce simple songs that they are interested in learning. Read More

I always want to make sure my students can apply what they learn in my lessons to their participation in their actual choirs. If a student is preparing for a PMEA Choir audition, I will help them prepare the repertoire as well as provide a mock audition. If they sing in a church choir, we will work on sight singing hymns as well as working on any difficult literature. If they simply want to learn more about music theory, I will focus on that. I use my own materials and lesson plans based on my past experiences and education. For beginners, I will generally start with simple songs like Sweet Home Alabama, I Love Rock n Roll, and Heathens. These are all songs that can be played and sung simply and most students have heard them already! After graduating from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts (concentration in Creative Writing and Jazz Studies) in 2005, I have spent the past 17 years helping hundreds of private students of all ages, ability levels, backgrounds, and styles discover their musical voice on their chosen instrument.
