For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. With more than 35 years in professional music, I have been able to understand that the mental attitude and the openness of the sensitivity to face the music that you are going to do at a certain moment is what makes the difference. Although you have many technical skills in your instrument, if you do not feel what you are going to play and you are not mentally safe and calm, relaxed, the music that will come out You will not touch any heart. For beginning students who are children, I start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements (or the Hal Leonard Guitar Method for guitar students) to build a strong foundation in reading music, proper technique, tone production, and fundamental skills. Once students have a solid grasp of the basics, I introduce age-appropriate solo repertoire to develop confidence and prepare them for their first recital performance. For adult learners, I tailor each lesson to their personal goals and musical interestswhether they are brand-new beginners, returning to music, or exploring a specific style. Read More

Teaching Philosophy My role as instructor is rooted in strength and stability, and I attempt to create an environment in which the student feels safe to explore the depth and breadth of their capabilities. This is true whether in the classroom or the studio. I solidify my position with an in-depth knowledge of the material to be presented and with the expertise to demonstrate and cultivate certain aspects of vocal technique. Read More

I'm a Suzuki-trained violinist and singer, a graduate of the University of Houston, and have studied music for the majority of my life! I'm based in Houston and have performed in opera and with various musical theater companies in the Houston area. Even though I've focused on classical music for most of my career, I love branching out into different styles, particularly Celtic, Texan, Jewish, Romani, and even a bit of Zydeco. Read More

For beginning students I use the Bastien System. For Adults, I use The Alfred Adult beginner for Piano Lessons. I try to adapt the method to the skill of the student, which incorporates my own system, based on years of teaching. I teach according to the student;s skill, and at their own pace. I sometimes use the Trinity College of Music, london, syllabus. Classes consist of warming up exercises, then the student works on the music assigned and the Instructor gives it a grade. Read More
