I like to see where the student is at level wise and take it from there. Example : if the student has never played before, we will start with how to hold the sticks. If there at level three but haven't touched 16th note triplets and go from there. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music; a student who practices and looks forward to coming to music lessons is a joy to teach. Each student must progress at his or her own pace; therefore realistic goals must be set at each lesson. Rewarding students for reaching practice goals makes students eager to learn more, and seeing how far they have progressed makes student's proud of their accomplishments. Read More

For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. They must also be allowed to be creative, explore and experiment with new ideas, as well as make and learn from their mistakes. With higher cognitive applications, students must be able to learn how to solve and overcome problem tasks, as well as apply critical thinking and supported with justified solutions. The end product of successful teaching is when the learner or student is able to utilize and apply the fundamentals of what have been taught to higher levels of learning, while achieving their maximum and fullest potential lifelong learning goals.
