Piano For beginning piano students who are children, I usually start with my own lesson sheets I composed. I also entertain kids by having them color and draw notes and scales. After being familiar with fundamentals, depending on students progress, I recommend them to study with Hal Leonard's or Alfred's. We also begin work on scales and cadences. Since dexterity and interest in exploring the keyboard usually exceeds note-reading ability. I use a chart to spell out scales and chords instead of a scale book at this point. Students enjoy progressing through the songs and ask for new scales. By the time they've completed "Teaching Little Fingers...." and have learned single-octave C major, A minor, G major and E minor scales, we're ready to move on to John Thompson's First Grade Book. I love seeing my students develop a passion for music! That is why I make sure each student progresses at their own pace by setting realistic goals for each lesson. I always acknowledge a student when they practice very hard and ask great questions. I've been working with children long before I chose my major and started college. Singing was always a big part of my "play". I studied elementary education but even when I was in the general classroom I used music. I enjoyed making up songs to help different skills and ideas stick. For all of my students, I like to begin by teaching correct "warm-up" methods. It is important to learn how to "warm-up" correctly so as not to hurt your voice. These methods usually differ from student to student, depending on their voice. For beginning students, I would like to begin with "Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias".
