In my second book I devote most of the curriculum to teaching the concepts of chord theory with movable chord patterns and learning to play scales over chords for improvisation. My methods vary greatly dependent upon the needs of the student. For younger students, I start with early fundamentals (music in general, breathing, and confidence) through easy songs that are recognizable and fun to learn. As a student ages, the voice matures, so I assess a student's vocal qualities and give them appropriate rep through their voice changing. My teaching experience began when I was in grad school, where I taught a few students at a local high school. Since moving to the KC area eight years ago, I have been consistently teaching and gradually building my private studio, which now has over 20 students! I love working with young singers (specifically grades 8-12) and helping them find the potential in their voices.  I have encountered the full range of ability levels, from very experienced (had lessons before, sung multiple solos in school choir, had lead roles in musicals, etc.) to complete novice (no lessons, no choir experience).  My overall approach to lessons is the same, regardless of ability level: consistent improvement from week to week using vocal exercises, songs, and an exploration of breath and the physicality of singing. We'll usually start with the First Book of [Voice Part]'s Solos and mix in one or two musical theater pieces. I also want my curriculum to include non-classical musical styles that each particular student enjoys and relates to. I desire for the student to learn as much about themselves as they do their instrument. I believe that piano and voice are conduits for expression of emotion and thought and are extremely beneficial in helping students find confidence and awareness. My main motto is that EVERYONE can make music and so I encourage all types of people to learn at my studio.
