When I first started teaching in college I used standardized materials and found it was helpful but inadequate to teach everything my students needed. So I began to explore other curriculum and attend the NAMM conventions and talk with other instructors. I saw there was a need for more expanded materials and started writing my own. I also want my curriculum to include non-classical musical styles that each particular student enjoys and relates to. For beginner's, I do typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books. For intermediate, I'll evaluate what materials they've used thus far in their lessons and go from there. If someone is familiar with a set of books in a positive way, there's no reason to change the books they're using. I do believe, however, there is profit in a variety of repertoire, so a diverse lesson is key. I have learned from experience that simply learning one genre (classical, jazz, showtunes) is less desirable than having a familiar ear to multiple styles. Read More

I am classically trained in piano and vocals, but I can teach many other styles. I believe that when a serious teacher interacts with a creative, ambitious student the musical results can be magical. The most effective lessons are one on one between the teacher and student. I like to provide both a fun learning experience and results. The study of music can provide long-term pleasure and accomplishment. I recommend my students practice at least 20 minutes per day to develop their abilities. Read More

 Every student, regardless of their goals or current ability level, will work on vocal exercises, songs, and sightreading.  The choice of repertoire will depend on each student's technical ability, range, experience with foreign language, and other factors such as personality and acting experience.  If a student has an interest in a particular genre of music, I am always glad to explore his/her personal interests (as long as the style uses healthy, supported singing!).  Read More
