Rather than being required to practice for a set number of minutes per day, we instead keep track of how many times an exercise or song is practiced. I taught group music courses for children ages 4-12 in a seasonal camp for 2 years, and I found out that combining body movements not only helps improve children's singing technique and posture but also makes students enjoy and relax more. When it comes to teaching voice, there is no one way of doing so. Each child learns differently and each child has a different instrument, and it is most important that that be figured out first. I will generally start out with well known songs sung by ear, and then depending on the students level help them to learn to read music. As my students get into more advanced music, I select solo literature that best fits their musical abilities. For my vocal students I select music that is appropriate for them from the very beginning. For my male vocal students, I coach them through the voice change, which is a rewarding experience for me.
