Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. All students in my music program are introduced to the Quality Music Instruction Curriculum. The books in this curriculum, allow each student to advance at his/her own pace while maintaining consistent progress. In addition to the Quality Music Instruction Curriculum, lessons are supplemented with the Bastien series. I lay the foundation for music by teaching all of the necessary rudiments of music such as scales, fingering, chord structures and then I incorporate music that's appealing to the students. Read More

Typically I start off gaining some insight into my students. Who do they look up to, the type of music they're into, what genres they want to improve in, etc... After gathering that information I ask them to sing a song that they enjoy or that means something to them. Based off of that I've gathered a substantial amount of information about their voice and their preferences to develop a curriculum/course outline for them. Read More

I usually take the first lesson to gauge what the student wants from learning their specific instrument. If they want to learn a specific song, if they want to get better at a certain genre, or if they just want something to do as a hobby! I believe it is counterproductive to force a certain system or lesson series that the student is not interested in. I have tons of practice books, scales, and warmups that I like to use to help the student become more proficient and confident in their craft. Read More

My goal is for all of my students to feel relaxed and free in their lessons. Singers use a lot of different emotions and they need to feel very much at home with their teacher in order to explore those moods. I teach taking into account the the student's age level and ability, and I'm very sensitive to time-constraints that most students have during their week. It's important to keep goals realistic, vocally safe, and fun. Read More
