I make it a point to ask all students (or parents for my younger ones) to purchase a notepad where assignments, expectations, exercises, tips/tricks can be written down to help them progress during the year and into the following week of lessons. My favorite aspect about teaching is pushing students beyond the limit they place for themselves. That being said there must be a mutual understanding that I will do all I can to help students get over a "learning hump" as I call it- I have access to a plethora of journals, articles, teaching websites, a personal library, all of these materials can be scanned, printed out, emailed and whatnot for the benefit of my students. One thing I love to implement early on is that your student shouldn't put themselves in a box. Many singers refer to themselves as "an opera singer" or "a belter" and I believe that all-singing styles benefit each other. There is a healthy way to explore all singing styles, and being fluent in those styles will make you more versatile throughout your whole life. My approach is always to encourage a student to stop using language like that was bad or that sucked. Its not the best or most productive way of getting you freer and singing with less tension or nerves. What I look to motivate in a student is becoming aware of any tension or nerves and explore where it comes from. Become an analyst. I constantly show images of the vocal instrument, Its really important for the student to understand their mechanism, and when teaching young people I share the same information but using a more digestible vocabular.
