For beginner students, we start off using the beginning books from "Piano Adventures" by Faber Faber, and published by Hal Leonard. They learn to read music, improvise, music theory, and play all style of music. A typical lesson for an elementary school student would be 10 min of playing assigned pieces that they've practiced for the week, 10 min of new songs for the next week, 5 min of music theory, and 5 min of some sort of musical game. It was fun to see my high school choir tell me to stop playing the piano as they really got motivated in singing al capella. My greatest challenges were arranging all of the band parts for a 20 piece jazz band in high school (no computer then) and then do a similar thing when I had to re-arrange SATB music to SSAA music when the expected choir became a 40+ voice women's chorus. Teaching music has always been my first love. I knew for a very long time, that I wanted to share the gift of music with others. I graduated from Welch College, in Nashville, TN with a Bachelor's of Music Education in 2013. I was immediately hired as an elementary music specialist for Metro Nashville Public Schools. I have taught private music lessons since 2011. After five years in public school, I decided to pursue teaching privately, full-time. Read More

Nothing is more important to me than my students' personal goals and having a discussion on how we can achieve those goals. I always want to make sure my students are moving forward in their creative process, so I like to check in with them at each lesson to discuss their progress. It's definitely important to me that my students practice on their own (especially if we're having lessons once/week.) I like to have my students record themselves (using the voice memo feature on their phone or, if possible, another recording device) so they can listen back to their lessons and practice between lessons. I'm an accomplished and passionate instructor who enjoys working with motivated students. I offer a love of music that translates into a connection with students and parents who sincerely want to advance. I graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1980-81. I have had the opportunity to perform and minister all over the world. I take a "student-centered" approach to working with the student (and also with parents of younger students), I will coach and advance this "team" toward the desired goals and outcomes. Read More
Instruments: Voice
My method of coaching focuses on three main areas: diaphragmatic breathing, vocal fold alignment, and proper laryngeal positioning. These three areas have a direct impact on tone quality, placement and ease of transition from chest voice to mix voice. The first few lessons with a new student always begins with good diaphragmatic breathing exercises combined with edging techniques for fold alignment up to the first vocal bridge. Once the student feels comfortable in both of those areas, I then combine those areas with proper larynx positioning to seamlessly navigate their first vocal bridge! Read More
