My teaching philosophy is "exploration as a road to mastery." I help students build a repertoire they can perform. This tends to be a combination of songs they know and love, and songs that I introduce them to. I introduce the elements of music theory in relation to songs. Scales, harmony, and ear training are grasped better, and enjoyed more, once a student has context. For beginners, I typically start students off with the suzuki books to build technique, but I teach them from the classical perspective rather than the suzuki method. With intermediate and advanced students, i will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for recital performance and/or a commercial piece (fiddle tunes, pop songs, etc) that the student is interested in learning. In 1988 I received my associates degree in music performance from Augusta State College, and then moved out west to focus on a career in music. During the 1990s as a commercial session vocalist, I was fortunate to have my voice featured on national network campaigns for ABC, NBC and CBS, as well as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Wheel Of Fortune. I then move on to basic note recognition on paper. This allows them to be able to visually identify when notes are moving up and down and so on. Once they become more comfortable with this method, I move onto memorizing and learning new repertoire. For more advanced students, I really try to hone in on these things while also focusing deeper on their technique. I have been around music practically since I was born, as my parents were both professional musicians and our house was constantly filled with the sounds of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. I initially decided to study piano and violin performance but changed my focus to education and teaching. As a passionate musician, I have enjoyed playing in symphony orchestras through the years, and I've found that being part of a group of people whose purpose is to produce a beautiful work of art is one of the most enjoyable experiences one can have. In 2018, I graduated from Belmont University with two Bachelor's Degrees in Commercial Music and Music Business.
