I am a positive and dedicated musician and music teacher who has a unique background of formal classical training and experience in various other genres. I have 12 years of classical training on the violin, have taught private violin and viola lessons to more than 300 students over the course of 6 summers through the Hempfield School District, participated in the NAfME All-Eastern Orchestra, performed for a year as the bluegrass and old-time fiddler in the Joe Hillman Band (Philadelphia, PA), performed as the celtic fiddler in The Ogham Stones (Lancaster, PA) for one year, and have led my own band for 2 years as a singer, songwriter and guitar player. I use the Suzuki method as well as the Doflein method books, and will choose other specific methods depending on what else the student would like to learn and what will help develop style, technique, and musicality. We will also have fun with seasonal and holiday music. Playing the violin is not about burying your head in a piece of music and learning just for memorization. It's about having fun, enjoying the music, making it musical, and most of all, loving what you are doing. Read More
Instruments: Violin Banjo Fiddle
My methos are geared towards the specific student and what he/she wants to learn. For students who specifically want to learn fiddle or banjo, I would mostly focus on learning by ear as I believe that conveys the style in the most authentic form. For classical students, we can work from the suzuki method books, but without strictly adhering to the teaching method. I believe that a combination of music reading and learning by ear will create the most musical and practical aproach to learning an instrument. Read More

For my beginning students, I typically start with either Essential Elements 2000 for strings or Sound Innovations. Both books give younger students a grasp on the fundamentals of technique. As they grow I then introduce solo repertoire by using the Suzuki Books but also like to add a fiddle book. Sometimes students gradually go either to fiddle or to classical. I try and encourage what they are more comfortable with. For adults, I try to find out what genre of music they enjoy and try to gauge their ability level with a couple playing evaluations. Read More

For students who are serious about learning I believe a goal-oriented approach is the best, having a certain level or certain piece to try to reach by a specific time. Accomplishing this goal and seeing the results from working through the steps needed to learn a piece is very rewarding. This leads to new goals and the motivation to learn and accomplish even more. Once the basic foundation is in place the learning will become easier and the students' enjoyment will increase. Read More
