I started singing recreationally of my own volition at age 5, coming up with improvised musicals in my parents' living room and filming them with my mom's camcorder. I took advanced choir classes in middle school and high school and was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for several rock bands throughout high school. My motto is my students create their own lesson. I formulate lesson plans off of the styles of music you are most interested in. If my student has a more "just for fun" attitude, the lesson will inevitably be a more light hearted feel. Therefore, I try to keep each lesson engaging and fun while also setting reasonable goals for my students. I am interested in the individual growth of my students. I encourage exploration and learning through experiences, and if my students leave my classes with a little more knowledge and a great deal more wonder, I consider it a success. I like to follow my students down the tracks they are interested in and then choose to broaden the path once we are there. From this place I have written a 12 page chart featuring a Justin Bieber tune, written a Britney Spears song into Swing, put a Miranda Lambert song in five, and arranged an original by The Script in a Latin feel. For all beginner students, I begin with the Essential Elements books. Once fingering and bowing have been introduced, I begin incorporating level-appropriate scales. These etudes and scales are vital for learning the technique necessary for more advanced pieces. Once the student has completed the first Essential Elements book, we then select a piece for them to play, and keep this as our main focus while continuing to work on scales and etudes. Read More

When working with younger children, I use the Children's progressive method for guitar and for the older students I use the Hal Leonard guitar method books 1, 2 and 3. As my students progress, I supplement the lesson with songs that my students enjoy and want to learn. I also focus on ear training to help students musically hear what they are playing. Whether it's voice, guitar, ukulele, trumpet or recorder, hearing the music inside and being able to internalize the music is very important to becoming a well rounded musician. Read More
