I start each student with the Frances Clark Series. This is terrific in introducing all musical components to the learner. It starts off right away using ALL the notes on the piano. Black notes are used exclusively in some repertoire. Each building block is built upon the next and it just nicely adds , in a non-threatening way to what the student has learned before. My experience in teaching started when I was in undergraduate school fullfilling my vocal pedagogy requirements and was instantly drawn to it. I have always been selected to be the section leader in choir or the vocal coach in my casts and it has allowed me to better understand how we learn as musicians and Ive taken that with me into my own private studio. My teaching style is very transparent; I want my students to recognize what we are working towards and how close they realistically are to that goal. This way, the student and I are working together to achieve a greater understanding of their instrument! I love feeling like I'm helping a student gain an understanding of a topic, rather than simply dictating a list of rules to know. I myself have an appreciation for many different styles of music, so I do my best to help students understand stylistically what is appropriate, necessary, and customary about the repertoire they are performing. I have been singing myself since I danced around the living room to my Dad playing the accordian and singing, and been studying voice and performance intensly since the age of 15.
