I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice.  "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at.  "Making music", on the other hand, can be done by anyone at any skill level and is lots of fun.  The goal of practicing the trumpet is to become so familiar with the instrument that it becomes an extension of our body and mind, as effortless and automatic to perform as breathing or walking.  I use equal parts jargon, analogy, and humor to convey the technical and abstract concepts that help guide students toward this synchronicity of thought and sound.

I'm an enthusiastic instructor who loves teaching and making a difference in students' lives. I began singing and playing piano as a child and found a passion for it that I have continued through my entire life. In 2013, I graduated from The University of the Arts with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and in 2014, from The University of the Arts with a Masters in Music degree in Jazz Studies: Voice. I've had the opportunity to perform in the Southwest of France, The Academy of Music, The Kimmel Center and various jazz venues in Upstate NY and Philadelphia. I am now performing and teaching in Jacksonville, FL.

My approach is always to make music first. Yes I like to teach how to play "correctly" and all the "right" notes, but at the end of the day there is something bigger to take from music. Music moves people and it is my job as a teacher to show my students that beauty. The point of the lesson is to teach the student how to practice the materials and better themselves. I just want to see my students try, that is most important to me. At a younger age, I like to explore music they might already know or recognize from some form of media. As they get older though, I like to show them repertoire that will help their musicianship grow. I really have a lot to offer a student and the more that they know they want to do helps me build l lessons based on that.

Making lessons fun is my top priority, and I show that learning the basics and the fundamentals can be fun, if it is done correctly. For beginning students, I use John Thompson's books.  Students progress through Bastien, and Burgmuller, before moving on to graduated solo repertoire. Intermediate and advanced students will work on core Classical and Romantic period piano works, while building dexterity and fluidity by playing scales, chords, and arpeggios. At all levels, I employ the Leschetizky method of relaxed wrists as the means to develop a beautiful bell-like tone.

I like to give the students the tools to become their own teachers. As their private teacher, my goals are threefold: firstly, to help them build an understanding of the fundamentals of their instrument, including relevant techniques, posture, etc. Secondly, to help them build an understanding of musical concepts and of musicianship in general, including melody, harmony, rhythm, basic theory, etc. Thirdly, to help them cultivate a vibrant practice and playing program, including optimizing fun while practicing otherwise dry material, scaffolding their learning to extrapolate on what they already know, and giving them the tools to improve and develop with or without a teacher. If I can help them form a working understanding of these three basic areas, I know they’ll be well on their way to becoming a solid, well-rounded musician in whatever discipline they choose to follow.
