Voice Students:While the basis for my vocal technique is rooted in the classical Bel Canto tradition, my students do not end up having a "classical" sound (unless that is what they want). Regular lessons usually consist of reviewing exercises, etudes, and songs that were assigned from the previous lesson and then making adjustments as needed. I like to begin with the basics of singing technique, sight reading, and music theory. In order to be a successful singer, one must be proficient in all of these! I like to assign music by the second or third lesson, depending on the student's readiness and ability. I typically assign one classical and/or one musical theater song, depending on the student's interest. I start with only these two genres because I feel that singing something that the student can hear on the radio can be difficult to sing while implementing the new technique they are learning in lessons with me. I like to build units or goals for each student when private teaching . It helps me and the student know what needs to be worked on. I also tend to be a visual instructor , meaning I like to use tricks to teach students different vocal technique. Although I do not mind accommodating to a students needs if their instruction is to be taught differently.
