Hi there this is Ian. I began taking clarinet lessons at the age of 12 years old. From then on I branched out to other instruments including guitar and piano. The classes are planned based on the individual's voice range. In general, classes begin with breathing techniques, followed by vocal warm-ups. Students at a beginner level will learn German lieder or Italian songs from the "24 Italian Songs and Arias" from the Schirmer's Publishing. I am an intuitive teacher: I have learned how to observe my students, their moods, their energy levels, and adjust my lesson plan on the fly. For instance, one student has ADHD, which I manage by injecting exciting new rhythms for him to mimic when I see his attention wander. I began teaching beginner piano when I was in middle school and caught the teaching bug! (My dad was a high school choir teacher for thirty-five years, so I must have caught it from him.) Now I teach violin/fiddle, voice and piano. I believe that learning classical music and sight reading are both fundamentals to begin learning any instrument. I will also choose music for students who don't have their own or would like ideas to set them in the right direction. I usually devote some time to teaching sight-reading in my lessons when someone is unsure of how to read music, and the rest of the time will be focused on the actual mechanics of vocal production and performing.
