In the first lesson, I listen very carefully to what the student wants to achieve and how they feel about the way they sing. Then, I begin my strategy of how to devise a skills building foundation based on their needs. After a few exercises, I can understand how quickly they can adapt and try new techniques. When I first start working with students, I strictly work on warmups for a few lessons. The first lesson is usually when students get their jitters out about singing in front of someone and learn that I'm really not a scary person. I also get to know where their voice sits, what is beautiful about their voice and what we could work on. Whenever I give a student a critique, I always begin by saying something positive they did. Then I explain the critique and how they can improve the next time. I want my students to feel like they have accomplished something, while knowing that there is always room for improvement. Positive reinforcement always keep the students motivated. I then took a year to work in the industry at several regional musical theater and opera houses domestically and internationally.
