I began teaching voice in 1998 and have had a few students ever since. I had a previous career in furniture conservation and taught classes in that field too. I teach in my home studio, or I go to students' homes, which ever works best. My students have ranged in age from 6 to 85. I find they make the best progress if they can make some time to practice regularly: I endeavor to ensure that the student has repertoire that they find interesting and fun, and that will stretch them. I have been a full time teacher for 5 years. I work with ages as young as 3 and as old as mid 60's. I enjoy the variety in ages as I believe my approach to teaching is one of building a strong musical foundation and I am skilled and flexible to teach these concepts to all ages. My experience in the music therapy field as well as my personal experience being homeschooled when I was young has led me to hold the philosophy that every student succeeds most in an individualized environment. For that reason, I first learn about the student: their interests, their strengths, their struggles, and the way that they see the world. I began teaching private voice lessons to high school-age children in 2016. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with people ages 5-30. The Metropolitan Opera Guild was an excellent teaching experience, where my mentors included teachers at Lincoln Center and New England Conservatory alumni. As a participant in NEC's Vocal Pedagogy program, I had the experience of teaching lessons to my colleagues in NEC Opera. Regular lessons usually consist of reviewing exercises, etudes, and songs that were assigned from the previous lesson and then making adjustments as needed. My first experience giving lessons actually began eight years ago with my first instrument, the guitar. I have been playing guitar since I was 7 years old, though I still consider Voice my main instrument. This was my first experience teaching and everything I needed to unleash the excitement and passion my instructors had shown me throughout my life.
