For those students (both children and adults) who are just beginning lessons, we will focus on the development of basic technique. This is centered around breathing, posture, and basic musicianship. We will spend time working on basic notes, rhythms, and ear-training in addition to vocalizing and learning songs to help develop and reinforce what we learn in our exercises. I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. This past summer I was selected as one of 18 young artists for the Up North Vocal Institute, a highly selective opera performance program with applicants all around the world. I have also played trumpet for the Marching Band, Big Band, Baroque Ensemble, and was the principal trumpet of the Moravian College Community Orchestra. I have over 30 years combined experience on my instruments, I have 21 private lesson students in voice and piano, and I was accepted to go to New England Conservatory to get my master’s in Vocal Performance in Opera. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My mother influenced my life as a musician. In 1969 she encouraged me to audition for the Newark Boys Chorus. I auditioned. I was accepted and sang in choir-school for three years, singing music from Renaissance to R&B. In 1980 I received a BM and MMT from Oberlin Conservatory. At Oberlin I met three great teachers who encouraged me to sing professionally. I pursued the career! For beginning students it is most important to me to help them build a habit of "how to practice" to keep their voice healthy. Secondly, I give them individual exercises and short music excerpts that they enjoy and we can learn together.
