I enjoy working at the begining to intermediate level for children as I get to introduce the earliest piano musical skills and I usually spend thirty minutes on teaching piano practice methods and thirty minutes on music theory skills. My teaching style is very student-oriented. So it varies from lesson to lesson and student to student. The goal is for my students to become more confident singers and musicians. In order for that to happen lessons need to be focused on them. I could spout teaching philosophies and strategies all day but in reality every student is different. My teaching style is one that is not used much at beginning levels but for me, that's why it works. Teaching a young student how to play the instrument by sound and not by reading notes allows them to use their imagination while playing. When students figure out for themselves, that is when the best kind of learning happens. I began teaching my sophomore year of college teaching a beginner class aimed at teaching 5-8 year olds the foundations of music in a fun and interesting way. Soon after, I started teaching private piano and voice lessons to students age 8-18 as well as directing performance program shows. I have found that letting students pick their own material to work on helps keep them motivated and interested. I try to relax the student first with body relaxation and breathing methods. We then do warm up vocal exercises to build the voice and then work on songs. I play the accompaniments on piano for them and they can record all of the lesson. I also do vocal coaching and incorporate acting methods. Piano students need to learn how to play basic songs first but then we can start to incorporate songs or other music they like into their lessons. Read More

About the time I started a family, I consolidated my teaching, opening a home studio while maintaining my position at the boarding school. Since 2006 I have taught every year in a summer arts program for gifted and talented youth, only taking off the summer of 2013 while on maternity leave. While I do recommend my beginning students start with a classical foundation, I also teach a variety of contemporary commercial music (CCM) styles including pop, Music Theatre, and country, among others.
