My teaching style is very transparent; I want my students to recognize what we are working towards and how close they realistically are to that goal. This way, the student and I are working together to achieve a greater understanding of their instrument! When teaching both voice and piano I find music literacy vital. In younger students first developing aural skills, I like to sing and repeat tonal and rhythmic patterns. I also give handout assignments to learn notes on the staff. With older and more experienced students, I devote time in each lesson to sight reading and sight singing. As a singer who has already experienced some of the traumatic effects of misuse and overuse of singing, I believe that health comes first. Anyone can learn to sing but there are so many significant factors that most teachers forget to include in their training.
