I've been playing, singing and performing more than 10 years. I honestly feel there is a lot for me to learn too, but also have a trustworthy experience on this, reason why I'm able to share a lot of knowledge with my students not only about music but life too since after all they are really close to each other. I currently play at the UNM top jazz big band, and in a few jazz combos within ABQ. Read More

I don't believe in wasting too much of a student's time running scales. I'll test your ear and your sense of pitch with a few scales initially, and then move on to the study of singing styles, the key aspects or projection, dynamics, phrasing, and how to blend your influences into your own style, while offering some tips on breathing well and staying fit: a great singer, much like an athlete, must stay in training, and always have ears to hear more and learn more. My supportive approach to teaching begins with finding out where the student is in skill development and assessing the student's desire to learn or need for the subject matter, then assisting them, with materials and techniques, in learning the skills necessary for their chosen goals. For piano students several methods can be used: J.W.Schaum, John Thompson, Alfred Adult Course, etc. . For voice students, the Cocone, Vaccai, and Abt Methods can be applied. Read More

For beginning piano students, I use Alfred's All-in-one Piano Course books. These books combine repertoire and theory, thereby cutting down on the number of books a new student needs to purchase. I use a variety of materials for voice students. I may ask that my voice students purchase books of repertoire that contain songs useful for building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses. However, I also have an extensive music library in my home studio. Read More

I try to keep the student as interested as possible, some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily. I believe that motivating and inspiring music students requires a different approach. I love to teach because its very rewarding to see when a student gets it after many trials and errors. Every practice session should have a goal, and practice goals are more important than setting a time. I believe that everyone has the capability to play something easy and fun if he/she is willing to put some time into the practice. Read More

Whenever I meet with someone, I feel it's always best to get to know them and ask them "why music?". From there it sparks a conversation, and we start setting goals - which is super important! This is how we check in with ourselves along the way to make sure that the student is getting the most out of their lessons. I will also ask them questions about their practice regimen (if they already have one) and come up with improvements to help them practice more efficiently. Read More
