I like to make my lessons engaging and fun. For students who are beginning their guitar journey, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of guitar, such as teaching them the body of the guitar (head stock, tuning pegs, string names, frets, how to hold and use a pick, etc.). We then will go on to learning how to position their fingers on the guitar neck and frets to play notes, learn chords and eventually, once they are ready, we will start working on age appropriate songs for the students to learn. I currently teach high school students piano performance as well as AP music. I studied at the renowned Hartt School of Music, Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz in Hartford CT where I graduated with my bachelors in music with honors. I begin with the basics of breath control and work to help each student find their natural voice. I use different vocal exercises to help improve tone and range and then incorporate what we've learned from those exercises into singing songs. I would begin each lesson with a vocal warmup so that I can see where their tone is placed and if they are an alto/soprano/tenor/etc. I would ask what genres they are interested in or what types of music they like.
