Jamie S. is a teacher, guitarist, singer/songwriter, saxophonist, and composing pianist. His teaching career began at the age of fourteen, as a volunteer in the Songcatchers, Inc. program, teaching saxophone and piano to underprivileged children in New Rochelle, NY. He went on to study music at the University of Rochester/Eastman School of Music. In 2007 he did an eight-month internship at Island Def Jam/Universal Music Group whilst living in Harlem, after which he completed an independent study on the modern music industry, and was awarded the first ever Bachelor of Arts Degree in Popular Music and Jazz from Rochester/Eastman. We start each lesson with proper breathing technique, the cornerstone of all vocals. We then move on to various vocal exercises to help condition the voice. Then we will work on the songs that interest you and that you are eager to sing! I will use a piano for warm ups and conditioning exercises. It's very important for me to see my students progress without tension through methods grounded in the Alexander Technique that release micro-tensions in practice, which manifest in performance. Vocal health and improving vocal quality across a singer's range is also of utmost importance. I tailor lessons according to the singer's level of proficiency and the complexity of the material or repertoire covered. Each lesson is personally tailored to the students needs, with a focus on where that individual student needs to grow.
