I teach kids with Frederick Noad's Guitar Solo Playing and also I adopt the guitar curriculum created by Austin Classical Guitar. Both methods provide several pieces that the kid plays with the teacher. In this way, while the kids play simple notes/lines and start developing some skills (musical and technical), they are making beautiful music together with the teacher or other students. I teach my students songs that they want to learn, but at the same time I explain the music theory that goes with it. I teach finger and coordination exercises to help with technique. For beginning students, I typically start with some exercises for the left hand and right hand, easy arpegios, scales, melodies and chords. Once the student progresses to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
