My approach to singing comes from the Bel Canto school of singing. Bel Canto is Italian for beautiful singing and while I was trained this way, I believe in meeting students at their vocal level and build from there. I dont subscribe to the one size fits all method because we all perceive our voices very differently. Throughout my university years, I had some teachers who got frustrated when they instructed me to sing a certain way that I could not understand and I never want my students to be confused or feel misunderstood during our lessons. I believe it is important to build a strong technical foundation and knowledge of the mechanics of the voice, while also focusing on performance and real-world musicianship. With contemporary music theory (beginning to advanced) integrated into each lesson, students learn to understand and apply a musical vocabulary that is necessary to communicate in the industry. As a vocalist myself, I think too often singers have trouble communicating with their bands in a rehearsal setting or with producers and engineers in a recording setting; therefor I see the benefit in students being able to identify the grooves and "feels" of their selected pieces as well as being able to count-in a band. For piano lessons I generally prefer to use the Alfred curriculum, but am well versed in other options should the student already be accustomed to certain styles. I have assisted students with their Certificate of Merit completion, and worked several students through the entire Alfred curriculum, till they went on to achieve collegiate scholarship opportunities.
