From there I transferred to Southwestern Adventist University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences and minored in Vocal Music. For beginner's, I do typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books. For intermediate, I'll evaluate what materials they've used thus far in their lessons and go from there. If someone is familiar with a set of books in a positive way, there's no reason to change the books they're using. I do believe, however, there is profit in a variety of repertoire, so a diverse lesson is key. I have learned from experience that simply learning one genre (classical, jazz, showtunes) is less desirable than having a familiar ear to multiple styles. Read More

I work with each student to figure out why they're taking voice lessons and figure out accomplishments that they want to achieve. I'm tired of voice teachers only teaching classical music, especially when a student says they want something different. For piano students just starting out, I like Alfred’s basic piano library, and the Bastien piano basics. There are several other piano courses I’m excited to try as well. For both piano and voice students, I like to include a book of tunes with which the student is familiar: movie tunes, Disney songs, etc. For older students, I will focus a little more on the different time periods of music and help them to gain an appreciation for each. When sequential learning is introduced, along with material that motivates, this encourages dedication and progression. I believe most students learn best when they feel they have input in some of the learning process. My students are also encouraged to participate in competitions and recitals.
